When an archer is shooting for nothing, he has all his skill. If he shoots for a brass buckle, he is already nervous. If he shoots for a prize of gold, he goes blind or sees two targets — He is out of his mind! His skill has not changed. But the prize divides him. He cares. He thinks more of winning than of shooting– And the need to win drains him of power.
Chinese sage Chuang Tzu
It’s an interesting parable and I’m sure we’ve all come across people involved in sport who at times react in this way to pressure. I have been involved in coaching armature teams and individuals over many years, working to help people achieve their potential. Developing both a positive mental approach and physical ability.
Sport has historically had a large amount of Performance based coaching to maximise potential, its also key to develop all areas of yourself including mental flexibility and focus.
These techniques not only work with the elite sports people but also the plodders like myself they formed a key part of my transformation from couch potato to completing an Ironman triathlon. There is a big difference between talking about what you want to do and being ready to do it.
Mental readiness has everything to do with being in the moment, positive, focused, and fully committed to a deliberate plan for success. When you choose to get yourself mentally ready your focus switches from self doubt to the forward focused, achievement based outcomes. Recognizing what you can control and being flexible in what you can’t. Identifying positive learning opportunities by maximising every training session. Understanding what you want to achieve in terns of frequency duration and intensity.
If you want me to join you or your team in your journey to being the best you can be, just drop me a line
